About Velocisaurus

Velocisaurus is a genus of abelisaurid theropod dinosaur that lived in what is now Argentina during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 70-66 million years ago. It was a small to medium-sized carnivore, measuring around 3-4 meters in length. Its name means 'swift lizard,' and it is known from a single specimen that was discovered in the Santa Maria Formation in the Rio Colorado Subgroup. The specimen consists of a partial skeleton, including elements of the skull, spine, pelvis, and limbs. Velocisaurus is characterized by its relatively small size, short snout, and sharp teeth. It may have had a similar diet and habitat to other abelisaurids, such as hunting smaller prey in wooded areas or along rivers.
