About Isisaurus

Isisaurus is a genus of sauropod dinosaur that lived in what is now India during the Early Cretaceous period, about 122 million years ago. It was a large plant-eating dinosaur, with a long neck and tail, and four sturdy legs. Its fossils have been found in the Lameta Formation of Gujarat, India, which was a tropical environment with lakes, forests, and rivers. Isisaurus is known from a partial skeleton, including a number of vertebrae, a rib, and a tibia (shin bone). Based on these remains, it is estimated to have been about 18 meters (60 feet) long and weighed around 8-10 tons. Its name, Isisaurus, means 'Isis reptile' after the Egyptian goddess Isis, and was chosen because the fossils were discovered in the vicinity of the city of Ahmedabad, which was named after the same goddess.
