Description: Aardonyx is a genus of early sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Early Jurassic Period, about 190 million years ago. It was a relatively small sauropod, with an estimated length of about 20 feet and a weight of about 1 ton. Aardonyx had a long neck and tail, and walked on four sturdy legs. Its body was probably covered in a layer of tough, scaly skin, and it may have had some type of armor or protective plates on its back. Aardonyx was discovered in South Africa in 2010, and was named by paleontologists in 2013. It is considered a transitional form between more primitive sauropods, such as Melanorosaurus, and more derived sauropods, such as Diplodocus. Aardonyx had some features that were typical of more primitive sauropods, such as a shorter neck and a more robust build, but it also had some features that were more typical of derived sauropods, such as a longer tail and longer hindlimbs. This suggests that Aardonyx may have played an important role in the evolution of sauropods, helping to bridge the gap between the more primitive and derived forms.
